Exchange safety

Every safeguard, plainly.

For students, and for the professors and parents reading over their shoulder. What we check, what we keep, what happens after a report, and what we never do.

  • Verified students only
  • Reports read by people
  • No audio or video recorded

Every layer, plainly

For students, and for the professors and parents reading over their shoulder.

  • What we check at the door

A six-digit code to a current student address at a recognised university, the student's own statement that they're enrolled, and their confirmation that they're 18 or over. Alumni addresses are refused. Every student is checked again once a year.

  • What we don't keep

The school address itself. We keep a scrambled form of it, so one address can verify only one account, and which school it belongs to. No ID uploads.

  • The wall

TwinTalk introduces a student only to other students, checked on our server every time two people are put together: matching, pods, events, bookings and invitations. Nobody outside can find, add, book or invite a student first.

  • Reports, read by people

From the call, after it, or from their profile. A person at TwinTalk reads every report with the last five minutes of the call's captions and chat, and can warn, pause or close the account. They're never told who reported them.

  • Blocks, both ways, for good

A block is instant and mutual: neither of you can find, match, book or call the other again.

  • The live check

Speech is checked live for harassment. If something is flagged, the person it was said to decides whether the call goes on.

  • Bans that stick

A ban covers the account, the email, the card and the device, and a banned student's school address can't verify another account.

  • No recordings

No audio or video is kept after a call. Captions stay in each person's own account, where they can delete them.

  • The Twin never exposes a partner

A Twin reads only its owner's own speech. Reports and shared cards never contain the partner's words.

  • Schools stay facts

A student's school is shown only to other verified students, as a plain fact. It's never shown to anyone outside the Exchange.

Students only, by design

TwinTalk introduces a verified student only to other verified students. It's checked on our server every time two people are put together, never by hiding things in an app.

  • Verified students
  • Everyone else on TwinTalk
  1. 1Your own invitationSomeone you already know: you invite them, and that call is yours, outside the Exchange.
  2. 2Other learners, if you chooseOnly after three days without a student partner, only if you tick the box, only trusted members.

Nobody outside can find, add, book or invite a student first.

The one choice that widens the circle

After three days without a student partner, a student may choose to also meet other learners who aren't students. It's one unticked box, on its own screen, explained in plain words, and it can be turned off at any time. Only trusted members can be open partners:

  • 18 or over, with a confirmed email
  • At least three calls behind them
  • No upheld report, in good standing
  • An account at least 14 days old

Open partners never see the student's school. The student's own comfort setting always applies.

After a report

  1. The reportIn the call or after

From the call itself, right after it, or from the person's profile. The other person is never told who reported them.

  2. A person reads it

With the last five minutes of the call's captions and chat.

  3. A decision

A warning, a pause, or the account closed, and a ban where it's earned.

  4. Not a student?At once

A report that someone isn't really a student re-checks their school address immediately.

To reach our safety team about a person or a call, report it in the app. For anything else, including questions from a professor or a parent:
